About the Shire

Local information that will interest long term residents as well as visitors and newcomers. The Shire covers an area of 7,549 sq kilometres with a population of 5,140, according to the 1991 census.

 The main population centres include Barham (1233), Moulamein (465), Tooleybuc (approx 250), Wakool (approx 250), Goodnight, Koraleigh, Kyalite and Murray Downs.

Moulamein has excellent sporting amenities eg. lawn bowls, grass tennis courts, swimming pool, netball, football and cricket facilities, water skiing, clay target shooting and the fishing club which fish for Murray Cod, Yellowbelly and Crayfish.

The Shire Offices and Depot are ultra modern using latest technology. The Moulamein Public School caters for students up to Year 6. There are bus services to Barham and Swan Hill for senior education. (Both Barham and Swan Hill (Vic) are roughly 69 km from Moulamein).

Barham township is based on the Murray River, the town is the largest town in the shire has a greater range of services available for the community. These include squash courts, bowls club and an excellent golf course.

There is a good 9 hole golf course at Tooleybuc while Murray Downs boast a championship course.

 The climate is semi arid temperate the area being known as "Riverina". The low rainfall means predominantly clear skies with very warm summers. The topography is flat with small sandy hills in areas. Vegetation varies from forest of giant river red gums through Riverina grasslands to mallee.

 The whole area is rich in bird life ranging from blue wrens to waterfowls to the mighty Wedge tail eagle. Kangaroos and emus are plentiful.

There are 1769 km of roads within the Shire, which includes: 42 km of State Highway; 310 km of regional (also known as main or classified) roads, 1375 km or local (also known as shire or unclassified) roads, 41.63 km of roads and streets within the main population centres.

There are 75 bridges maintained by the shire, of which 43 are timber; with 26 bridges on regional roads, 49 on local roads and an additional 8 bridges classified as National Bridges and maintained by the Road Traffic Authority.
