History and Local Attractions
Wakool Shire turned 100 in June 2006. As one would expect, it has quite a bit of history and historical significance to offer.
Just some of the historical points of interest are included in the pages listed. If you are a new resident, visitor or even a local, you may want to have a read. Old Court House Moulamein - Published: 11 Nov 2008 Old Court House, as it is known locally, is Moulamein’s original court house and police station. It is located on a section of land between where the Billabong Creek and Edward Rivers meet.
It is a historical building under the care of the local Lions Club and can be viewed by contacting one of the reps, Marje Bull 03 58875363 or Judy Ireland 03 58875142 – to arrange a tour. more ..Grain Storage Sheds - Moulamein - Published: 07 Dec 2006 Rice and wheat silos are located on a parcel of land on the corner of Tallow Street (Hay Road) and Tchelery Road (Road to Tip), with the sheds facing Tchelery Road.
Moulamein’s original grain storage shed was built in 1969, with additions and extensions carried out over the years, to what you see today. more ..River Boats - Published: 07 Dec 2006 The first paddle steamer to trade on the Edward River was built for Lachlan McBean on his property, Woorooma Station, near Moulamein in 1878. The objective was to trade between Woorooma and Echuca, and the main cargo was to be Lachlan’s wool, which was to be transported to the rail head at Echuca. more ..Rural Lands Protection Board - Published: 07 Dec 2006 Currently located in Tallow Street Moulamein. The office is situated in what was once one of the historical homes of Moulamein.
The Board is a branch of the Riverina Rural Lands Protection Board, with administration & billing being handled from the Deniliquin Office, which is the main office for the Riverina area. more ..Moulamein Wharf - Published: 11 Nov 2008 Moulamein Wharf structure was constructed in 1908. Downstream from the Edward River and Billabong Creek junction. The wharf still stands as a reminder of bygone days when the town prospered as an inland port, when the river system was the most effective means of transport for local produce.
As part of Council's 100 Year celebrations, a redgum wood carving of a river boat captain was produced which has been placed at the base of the wharf with a commemorative plaque as part of the upgrade works carried out during 2008, as a result of funding received. The restoration works are a credit to all those involved. more ..Places of Historical Interest in Moulamein - Published: 07 Dec 2006 Moulamein township was laid out by surveyor Thomas Townsend in April 1851 and approved by the Governor in July. The original survey plan shows the location of a number of buildings including the chief constables house, E Blackman’s Inn and the courthouse. more ..Barham Koondrook Wharf - Published: 07 Dec 2006 The Wharf was constructed in 1881. The Barham Koondrook Area is and has been a major freight centre for movement of local farm produce for many years.
The Wharf was a key component of the River, Rail and Road network and the area has been known for boat building. more ..Arbuthnott Sawmills - Published: 07 Dec 2006 Arbuthnot Sawmills Pty Ltd was established on its present site in 1889, by Alexander (Sandy) Arbuthnot.
They are suppliers of all redgum timber sizes, specialising in kiln dried furniture & flooring timbers. Also available are redgum chips and fire wood. Direct sales to the public.
Guided tours of the sawmill operation etc run at 10.30am & again at 2.00pm. Located in Punt Road Koondrook. more ..River Redgum Furniture - Published: 07 Dec 2006 Was established in 1991. Has established itself in the small tourist town of Koondrook, in northern Victoria. (The redgum capital of the world). more ..Murray Downs River Cruises - Published: 07 Dec 2006 The majestic Murray River – a wonderland of water birds, flora & fauna and a photographers delight.
A cruise on the MV Pyap is an excellent opportunity to see and experience these natural attractions of the area. more ..Attractions in Tooleybuc & surrounds - Published: 19 Jan 2007 Tooleybuc is well known for its relaxed riverine environment, great for fishing and camping.
